I think everyone, at least the convertible owners, have had this problem. My Air Bag Light came on at 3500 miles. When someone sits in the passenger seat, the airbag OFF light is lit up. I'm in Vegas this weekend, should I get it looked at before someone rides in the seat or can it wait 'till I get home?
I assume it's just a sensor or something maybe?

I am not familiar with any "known" airbag sensor defect, but then again...I don't stay on top of those things like I used to.
I think any issue dealing with the airbags should be checked out right away...at least the first time it happens.
I thought that the passenger airbag light was supposed to turn ON whenever there was a passenger (of significant weight) in the seat. Maybe I am wrong?
I would at least CALL the dealership and talk to a service manager.

I haven't had this problem with my 'vert.
Give Barber VW service a call @ 805-642-6707. I think the service area is open till 2pm on Sat, then back again early Mon am.
