Yesterday I swapped 5th gear in my Beesel. I now have a .658 5th gear ratio instead of the stock .755. I have only driven it about 60 miles but first impressions are that I like it. The engine now turns 1,954 RPM at 60 mph. The old gear turned 2,216 RPM. There is no engine noise at cruise speed but there is road noise. The diesel has enough power to accelerate from 40 in 5th gear about the same as it did at 35 with the old gear.
It was a very easy job swapping the gear. It took about 2 hours excluding other work that I did not the vehicle. I put NEW Castrol Synthetic 75W-90 gear oil in. It shifts like a NEW vehicle. I think it had the wrong grease in the transmission. When cold, it was difficult to shift into and out of 1st and 2nd gear. After warm up, it was smooth. Now it is smooth all the time.
