Auto Express reports, "The Volkswagen Golf is ready to join the hybrid club! The German company will unveil a new diesel-electric version of its best-selling hatchback at next month's Geneva Motor Show." The Golf is sold in the U.S. as the Rabbit. The VW diesel hybrid "will return an incredible 83.1 mpg." The diesel portion of the powertrain is believed to be the 2.0-liter that powers the VW Tiguan, a small SUV set to hit U.S. showrooms this May. This "will be boosted by an electric motor that not only gives extra performance, but could allow the car to run on its battery only at low speeds, too." The German automaker may be making further plans for its diesel-hybrid system, as Wired adds, "According to Britain's Channel 4, VW is considering the hybrid drivetrain in a Jetta and Audi A3." DailyTech speculates, "Other Golf-based vehicles that would be a prime target for the new powertrain include the upcoming VW Tiguan and Audi Q5 crossovers." New CAFÉ fuel efficiency standards may drive the growth of diesel in the U.S. next year. "VW is bringing back its TDI motors," Daily Tech notes, "Nissan is looking to drop a Renault diesel engine into its next generation Maxima and Honda will provide four and six-cylinder diesel engines for its cars and trucks."
