Is there a way to have the passenger seat airbag removed or turned off?
The front passenger's airbag unit can be deactivated to enable the use of a rear facing child's seat on the front passenger seat. There are two possible ways to do this on the New Beetle. Both involve a trip to your local Volkswagen dealer. One way is for Volkswagen to use their diagnostic machine to recode the airbag electronic control unit, a sticker then has to be displayed that is visible from the passenger seat to warn adult passengers that the air bag is inactive. The other way that may be required is to fit a disconnection kit, supplied by Volkswagen; again a sticker has to be displayed.
As soon as the child seat is no longer required, the front passenger's airbag should be reactivated.
Please also note that you have to sign a form saying you have authorized this work and take responsibility for it. The service book is also marked to say the air bag has been disconnected with date it was disconnected. When it is reconnected this is also recorded. The information is also recorded in the service history held by Volkswagen.
