I just purchased a used '99 New Beetle.

One of the license plate lights doesn't work, and I suspect that the bulb is bad. How do I change the bulb?? I have tried to pry out the lens, but I'm afraid of breaking something expensive.

Also, the radion gets very poor reception. Is there a quick, easy fix? Or do I install a new radio to rectify the problem?

Any one have experience with these issues?

The manual says:
"Carefully pry out license plate light -2- with suitable tool until retaining tab -1- releases.
Remove license plate light -2-.
Disconnect electrical connector.

Installing
Connect electrical connector.
Insert license plate light in bumper.
Press in upper retaining tab -1- and lock in position."

I replaced one on my USED 1998 Beetle. I used a small screw driver to release the retaining tab (clip) located at the top of the lenses.

There are additional details in another section that says:
Turn bulb holder in direction shown -arrow- and remove from housing.
Pull out bulb (12V/5W), do not turn.

Send me a PRIVATE message with your email address and I will send a PDF document with the instructions and photos.

I have them and they fit perfectly and look great. Most LED license plate bulbs give you two little spot lights on your license plate. Since there is a whole PCB of little LED's you get a nice wide bright light. It's very white and clean looking. Very bright too, it casts a shadow underneath the whole bumper. To install you have to remove the two screws that hold the lens on the stockers. Then you pop out the stock bulb holder from the bumper with a thin flat headed screw driver. Then to undo the plug there is a small plastic clip that you pull straight out and remove completely from the connector. Then plug the new ones in, re-insert the plastic clip if you didn't lose it. Then just pop the new units into your bumper and enjoy! No error codes.
