I’m laying out the general routing for CENTRAL! and just need to hear from John from Eastern, and Lisa from Wisconsin to nail down where we’ll all meet up.

The preliminary route takes us from the Toronto area through Michigan to Joliet, IL where we’ll overnight like last year. We’ll head down towards St. Louis giving us lots of time to wander around some of Route 66. I figure we’ll then meet with Lisa (unless she’ll meat, oops meet along the way) and Eastern overnight in St. Louis. I just need to know your motel plans for that night if that’s where you’re staying. Last year we stayed just west of the city so we wouldn’t have the rush hour in the morning, which is fine, except that cancels grouping at the Arch. Then it looks like the regular CENTRAL routing overnighting in Oklahoma City before heading to Amarillo and Roswell on the last day.

Any feedback would be great, plus I’d like to start getting a list of people that plan on joining Central. Thanks.

Howie

The New Beetles Return to Roswell 10th anniversary (R2R/10) movement has sent out post cards to remind those who have attended past events to begin thinking about going.

If you go to their main site (our SoCal New Beetle site is hosting the caravan part of the information) you can down load your own postcard.

More info on the shirts to honour the 10th Anniversary of the Roswell NB show. The shirt will have the design shown on the show website (www.return2roswell.org (http://www.return2roswell.org)), plus the dates of the show underneath.
You do not need to attend the show to receive a t-shirt! It's a great design to wear at other VW shows, to your cousin's Bar Mitzvah, or while washing the dog. :)
Preliminary pricing is around the $15 mark, plus $3 extra for 2XL or 3XL. Shipping, if you need it, would be about another $4. All this can be paid with Paypal, and I don't need the money until I put the order in and this is all for sure. I only plan to buy about 150 shirts, so once they're accounted for, that's it, so order in the next week or so.
These aren't just any cheap shirts. The design will be digitally printed on it, not just silk screened or a rubber transfer that wears off. It's a 6 ounce shirt, similar to a "Hanes Beefy T", 100% cotton. The itchy neck tag is replaced with a printed label. It's double-needle tailored to retain its shape wash after wash. Also, the neck and shoulder seams are fully taped, so these will retain their shape and comfort for a long time.
So, order one to wear at shows, and another for hanging out with. Sure to become a collector's item! Please email me directly about the quantity and size needed. I know everyone is on a tight budget these days, so this gives you a few weeks to save up.

I'm in Kingman. If anybody needs company for the caravan out (I-40 east of the Colorado) I'm here. There will probably be some peeps from Vegas depending on what day we roll out.

[info from Topica site and relayed by Luke]

I just got off the phone with the Sally Port. We have 50 rooms in
our booking of which 26 are reserved as of today. I feel that some
of you have made reservations and have not asked for the "New Beetles
Return to Roswell" bookings. People are complaining that the Sally
Port is saying they are booked up for that week end. The booked up
counts our 50 rooms which there should be 24 rooms left. You must
tell them you are with the "New Beetles Return to Roswell" group to
get your discount and , now, even get a room. I also suggest that if
you did make reservations you confirm you got them in this "New
Beelles Return to Roswell" block of rooms.

Again you should make reservations now! You can cancel up to June
11th with no cost to you if something happens and you can not attend
- so nothing gained nothing lost. The phone number for the Sally
Port is (575) 622-6430. If you have any trouble ask for Amy Morales,
but Irene at the front desk is pretty good to.

See you in Roswell,
Earl "Cueball" McCutcheon

[info from Earl via the Topica site - Luke]

Hi All,

Just got back from visiting Roswell to try to organize the event a little more. Even driving into Roswell in my Chevy pickup it was some how magical. A little different feeling because the weather never got above 60 degrees - unbelievable!

The city of Roswell is doing fine and has not seen too much difference due to the economy. They are VERY excited about our return. They want to work with us and make a big festival out of our event - pretty exciting. See below an article that was on the front page of the newspaper - not exactly as I stated, but close enough.

I will be talking with the organization committee about some possibilities and the activity plans for the event. Once we get them straightened out I will post the results so stay tuned - lots of neat things in the wings. I am not much of a computer geek so if you guys can help with posting to the .org and other sites as the news comes out, I would really appreciate it.

There are still about 20 rooms at the Sally Port still in our block. You must mention that you are with the "New Beetles Return to Roswell" group when you make your reservations.

See you in Roswell, Cueball

Subject: Adventure Day at R2R Event

Friday, June 27th, is ADVENTURE DAY during the New Beetles Return to Roswell event. ADVENTURE DAY is intended for everyone to explore on their own, in informal groups, the area in and around Roswell. Kind of a free day. Here are some options to ponder:

FORT SUMNER - North up US 285 to US 20 about an hours drive is Fort Sumner attractions. In 1862 the United States Army felt that the most effective way to deal with the hostile indians was to put them on reservations under military guard. This policy gave birth to Fort Sumner and the Bosque Redondo. The site became a state monument in 1968. Billy the Kid was killed and is buried in the Fort Sumner area. Attractions include; Sumner Lake State Park, Historical Murals, Billy the Kid Museum, Bosque Redondo Lake Park, Old Fort Sumner Museum, Grave of Billy the Kid, and Fort Sumner State Monument / Bosque Redondo Monument. www.ftsumnerchamber.com (http://www.ftsumnerchamber.com/)

LINCOLN COUNTY - To the West, out US 70 to 380, is Lincoln County about 1 hour drive from Roswell. Lincoln County is rich in history. Native Americans, the US Calvary, miners, cowboys, trappers, hunters, ranchers, outlaws, and pioneers have all left their mark. Great ranches, ghost towns, mining camps, and Mexican villages can still be seen unspoiled in this beautiful and diverse county. From the heights of 12,000' Sierra Blanca to the rolling pastures of fort Stanton and the streams of the quiet valleys, Lincoln County has something to offer everyone. Attractions include; Ruidoso & Ruidoso Downs - horse racing and casinos and the Hubbard Museum of the American West and Inn of the Mountain Gods casino and resort, The Howard Valley - the Billy the Kid National Scenic Byway and 1850s San Patricio hispanic village, Historic Lincoln - Billy the Kid National Scenic Byway leads you to Lincoln listed on the National Register of Historic Places visit Lincoln State Monument facilities and Lincoln Visitor Center, Fort Stanton - established in 1855 as a frontier outpost visit the museum.

ALAMOGORDO, WHITE SANDS - From archaeoastronomy to the future of space exploration, the NM Museum of Space History features exhibits that educate, entertain, and inspire visitors of all ages. New Mexico's only IMAX theater will take you out of this world. Museum hours of operation are 9 to 5. www.nmspacemuseum.org (http://www.nmspacemuseum.org/)

CARLSBAD CAVERNS - Driving South on US 285 you will arrive at Carlsbad Caverns National Park in about 1 hour. Experience the world's largest underground chambers. Complete walk-in tour takes about 3 1/2 hours. Big room tour takes about 1 1/2 hours. Cave opens at 8:30 am, last walk in at 3:30 pm, last elevator up is at 6:30 pm. $6.00 adults, kids 15 and under are free. The bat spectacle is one of the Park's greatest attractions. Flying out through the entrance each summer evening at sunset ( you will miss the UFO event if you stay to see this).

ROSWELL - There is lots to see and do in and around Roswell. They are holding the New Mexico 4-H Rodeo on June 27th, www.ccraroswell (http://www.ccraroswell/)@yahoo.com. The bottomless lake where you can swim and cool off. The down town area has lots of alien, retail and antique stores. The Roswell Museum and Art Center, the Patricia Lubben Bassett Art Education Center / Robert Goddard Planaterium, and the Anderson Museum of Contemporary Art are worth seeing. The Sally Port has an indoor swimming pool and spa area.

INTERNATIONAL UFO MUSEM & RESEARCH CENTER - The museum has graciously invited us to an open house starting at 6:00 pm. They will be serving finger food and giving us a private tour of the facilities. The museum is located at 114 N. Main St. (South of the Sally Port). Please try to make this important event!

So it is up to you to figure what it is you want to do (or just do nothing and hang out). Get with your friends on Thursday night or Friday morning to plan your adventure. Take pictures of your exploration and give them to Cameron Talley for viewing at the Saturday night banquet.

See you in Roswell, this is gonna be fun!

Nancy:

Once you get to Barstow, you won't need any maps; just follow along and enjoy the landscape. You will need an FRS radio to keep up on the chatter, some of which will be directions/upcoming turns.

We can exchange cell phone numbers if someone gets separated from the group since most FRS radios are only good for a few miles or so.

When we get lost it will be as a group ..... and maybe on purpose!!!

We all know how caravans go and it is hard to estimate time, but a plan is good. We can have exchanged phone numbers by then and try to coordinate as time comes near. Sue and Aaron have also volunteered to try to find a reasonable hotel close by for all to stay in. We need to start thinking of how many people will be at the party and how many will need rooms.
