View Full Version : Roswell Caravan Information.
Hi Team,
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. Well it is time to start planning in earnest for the New Beetles Return to Roswell event. You have (almost) all volunteered to help organize the folks in your areas and to plan the respective caravans. This map is my first rough cut at what I picture.
My hope is that the caravans will merge into two main legs as they come towards Roswell; one from the West coming from Albuquerque down and the other from the East coming up from Texas (we might need an ambulance if Jerry does try the Big Texas 72 ouncer!). The arrow routes are pretty rough and you should all try to get me more definitive ones as you can.
The following are what I hope to be the leaders:
1) The Pacific North West - Judy Carter, this would include Brenda from Alaska
2) Colorado - Rhonda Murray
3) So Cal - Luke Hall
4) Albuquerque - Sue Isley
5) Wisconsin - Lisa Herr
6) The Mighty Central - Howie Lipton
7) East Coast - John Steele
8) South - Arkansas - Mitch Perry and Florida - Volkey (maybe)
9) Texas - Sue Hester

It will be an important part of the web site to have information and links to the various caravans. Lisa Linn has volunteered to do this very important part of our organization and I will work with her to make it happen, but please feel free to talk with her directly. We think that maybe there should be links to each caravan from the web site with only the basics there so we do not have to change too much. I believe that 80% of the adventure of Roswell is getting there and back. This makes your parts in this event very important and special.
Please start your planning and coordinate your thoughts with me so I can keep track. The West guys and gals should try to get together (I hear rumor of a big party in Albuquerque prior to coming down to Roswell) and so should the East and South as I feel the more the merrier! Lets get 50 t 100 cars into each caravan as they come into Roswell as a goal.
I know that we are still 7 months away, but I feel strongly that you should start your planning now so you can publish your routes in a month or so - in that way we can get the information out and people can start making their plans. The R2R committee is trying to get serious about advertising the event in February and it is important that the caravans are started with planning and information at that time. Try to get as many people from your areas registered at the Sally Port if you can as that is how we are trying to keep track of about how many people to expect. Last I checked there were about 40 rooms reserved.

From Cueball Jan 5th, 2009:
HI West Coast Caravan leaders,
Sue and Aaron (of Ciao Bug fame) have volunteered to host a home cooked BBQ thing at their house in Albuquerque on Wednesday ,June 24th, evening. Time would probably depend on when the PNW, SoCal and Colorado guys can make it. Please try to give them a time that you are thinking of (like Luke Hall did for SoCal). We all know how caravans go and it is hard to estimate time, but a plan is good. We can have exchanged phone numbers by then and try to coordinate as time comes near. Sue and Aaron have also volunteered to try to find a reasonable hotel close by for all to stay in. We need to start thinking of how many people will be at the party and how many will need rooms.
I think that Judy needs to try to come down HWY 25 in order to pick up the Colorado group near Denver and Colorado Springs. These guys might want to come down on Thursday morning and meet up with the group just prior to leaving for Roswell on Thursday?
East Coast Caravan leaders,
Thank you John Steele for sending your preliminary route. I will change the basic route map to show that with the Arkansas group (Mitch) going South to meet up rather than North. Howie, I should all ready know the Central route, but could you refresh my memory? Lisa Herr - how do you think you would go?
All,
The basic map that I sent has purposely large arrows for the routes so they are more generic. I will update it with new inputs in the next few weeks prior to posting it in the web-site. It is meant as a basic idea guide with more detailed routes coming from another "linked" site for caravans because I feel they will be changing and have need for interaction as we get closer. I am working with the SoCal people who have a great stite that can have a running chat room for all the caravans that would fit the bill perfectly. As I home in on this opportunity I will let you know how to get information to the site leader so he can input and monitor. Keep an eye out for more information.
Lets concentrate on getting there for now and getting back later?
I know that Texas is a big state and some might want to come on their own or on Friday, but maybe they could arrange to meet up just before going into Roswell?
Does anyone know of someone in another area who might want to head up a caravan from their area? The more the better and the more arrows the better it looks to prospective sponsors. (Mid West seems sparse - Oklahoma?)
The line drawing for the web-site header and post card and advertisement page is done and it is now being colorized. Lisa Linn, Howie, and Ray Townsend please tell me what format do you want it in or do you just want the line drawing and your vendor can color it in as he sees fit? It is sized to be compatible with a 4" by 6" format for post cards, but can be scaled to fit with
email from Sue Isley, a SoCalNBC member, who lives in Albuquerque now.
Hello again all --
today CiaoBug and i did a little reconnaissance with respect to lodging
here in ABQ. we checked out the motels in the area previously
mentioned, just south of I-40, and west of a main thoroughfare known as
Coors Road. there are a number of motels are nestled together,
including Motel 6, Super 8 Motel, Days Inn, La Quinta Inn, and Quality
Inn & Suites. i figured that most people would be interested in either
Motel 6 or Super 8 Motel, so those are the two i investigated. of
course, they wanted to know how many rooms i thought we might need, but
i was unable to give them that information at this time. i was told
that rates were generally higher during the summer months, as this is
traditionally the tourist season. the current room rate at Motel 6 is
$39.95 (single), but that we might be able to get a reduced rate of
$35.95. at Super 8, i was quoted a rate of $46.88 (one king bed) or
$52.88 (two queens).
i would appreciate feedback in terms of the kinds of rooms people will
need (single vs. double) and how many rooms we will likely need so that
i can try to reserve a block of rooms at either one (or more) of the
motels. obviously, the sooner we can get this information together, the
better. i don't know if it's better to "reserve" too many rooms to be
on the safe side, or what? as i have never had to make these kinds of
arrangements before. i would appreciate any kind of help/advice that
you guys might have to offer.
look forward to hearing from someone soon!

If we could get the actual zipcode of the area, it would be a bit easier to search for hotels.

THANKS!
To SoCal Roswell Drivers:
Got this mesage from Sue Isley about rooms in Albuquerque, NM. The western group from Southern California will be leaving on Tues June 23rd, 2009. I need to get a final location for night #1 and the gathering location which will probably be Ontario Mills area.
However, Sue Isley has info on the rooms for the 2nd night in Albuquerque (or ABQ). She and Aaron will have a BBQ at their place. So there is a BBQ in ABQ! Our caravan (or carabug) will meet up with several others in that city to make the final run to Roswell on Thurs June 25th.
There are more details to be decided, but here is an important one. See Sue's email below.

hi all --
hope all is well with you all and your NBs. after waiting (to no avail) for the manager of Motel 6 to call me back, i finally returned to the scene personally and spoke to someone in person (again). the desk clerk with whom i spoke contacted the new manager, and she guaranteed a room rate, single or double, of $35.99 (+ tax, bringing the total to $40.58). i have a "courtesy hold" on 20 rooms, under my name ("Sue Isley," which needs to be mentioned when making reservations; you might also mention "New Beetles Roswell"), for Wednesday, 24 June. everyone needs to make their own reservations, and all may do so to guarantee their room reservations. the address and phone number are as follows: 6015 Iliff Road, ABQ, NM 87121; phone 505.831.3400. the motel has easy access both on and off I-40, and there are several conveniently located places to eat nearby, including a McDonald's and a Furr's Cafeteria.
as i mentioned before, there are a number of other motels in the same area, for those who do not wish to stay at Motel 6. i checked the rates only at one other motel, a Super 8, and found their rates to be somewhat higher at $46.88 single, and $52.88 double). below are listed the addresses and phone number of some of the other motels in that same area:
Super 8 Motel: 6030 Iliff Road; phone 505.836.5560
Days Inn: 6031 Iliff Road; phone 505.836.3297
La Quinta Inn: 6101 Iliff Road; phone 505.839.1744
Quality Inn & Suites: 6100 Iliff Road; phone 505.836.8600
Hampton Inn: 6150 Iliff Road; phone 505.833.3700
hope this is helpful. sorry it took so long to get this information together.
