A coworker was asking me about this werid vacation I was going on starting next week so I explained what is was about and my trips there. he said he was jealous after hearing about the adventures I have had going and coming. It made me think back 10 years ago of the first trip to Roswell.
I drove and we were meeting up with this big bunch of people in Las Vegas and we were going to head to this town in New Mexico together with my two sons. I do remember thinking what did I get myself into and what if these were some real wackos. I never had any exposure to car clubs or such we just don't have them up here unless you own a Corvette or Porsche. I also did not know anyone but Randy Carlson the few times I had talked to him on the phone nor I had not been to Vegas since 1976. I did not regret ONE minute of that trip. I wish the boys and I could turn the clock back and do it all over again. I am sure there was a few times the boys really wished that they could have really said what was on their minds especially whan the border patrol and the CO state trooper asked if they were in the car by their choice.
There was some memories that really stuck out- William ( the yougest ) going through his very first thunderstorm ever- we don't have them in Alaska he thought we were going to die and I thought we were because he was bouncing around so bad in the car I was having trouble driving, Zachary ( the older) catching a fish in Yellowstone and forgetting about it for a few days in the box on top of the car. The truckers in Nebraska talking on their CB's about some damn little green car that looked like some aliens took it over.
We drove through 39 states and in a two month period I put over 20,000 miles on that poor little car but it will probaly stand out as one of the best things ever. Now I really wish I was putting the box on my car once again but just not in the cards this time. I feel bad about missing the show and parade but I will walk down there and mingle with everyone all the same. I am so glad that you are putting together one last PARTY for us Earl. I know I have only been to a few but I really enjoy being with you all. Thank-you!
I leave next Sunday morning on the red eye to Vegas where it all began for me 10 years ago. I will see the CA group in Flagstaff in my " Alaska Wanna Be Beetle"
