Hey all,
I want to buy a portable GPS unit to use when I travel and rent a car. Anyone have one of these? How do you like it? What are the features you can't live without?
I have been checking them out, and so far it seems that the Garmin Nuvi 680 is the way to go, but wanted to hear from anyone here that might have a recommendation.
Thanks in advance!

We have a Garmin for the wife. It has kept the wife from getting lost countless times.
The voice commands are what make this unit useful for her. Sort of a wake up call that a turn is about to be missed.
The touch screen for setting up the from and to locations are easy to use.
The unit is small enough to put into carry on baggage when flying.
Mine is a hand held Magellan. Not as easy to use or program, but has other useful information. Programming requires the use of the four way push button. It gives your current location in degrees North and East. This is useful if you have a paper map, the location can be found. The Garmin can't do this. You have to Zoom out the display to get an over view of where you are. The Garmin is good as long as you are on a road. It can't tell you nice things like where that big rock you are standing on is located if you are well off the beaten path.
Get the Garmin, you'll be happy.

Larry,
I thank you for your recommendation, and I have heard the same from many people I have talked to. It seems that the Garmin Nuvi 680 is the clear winner.

We have a 3 year old Magellan and a Garmin (fairly new 5 " screen). The Garmin is nice but loses satellites regularly. A major pain if you forget to save your destination as you must reenter all :-( The Magellan auto-saves and seldom loses the "birds". It might be just our particular model of Garmin. Susan really likes it in spite of the problems the spoken street names are neat (the Magellan did not have this).
The most important feature? Ensure any unit you buy has a internal battery!!! I have taken mine on trips with rental cars that do not have 12 volt plugs or they do not work DOH. So to me this is the most important feature as either of them can be charged off my laptop!!! Good luck.
