Check out this 4 minute video on some more details on the 2008 50-state VW diesel engine. No word whether the New Beetle will ever have this engine, but the video does say this is a 'common rail' engine.
It seems VWoA will put this engine in the Jetta, Jetta Wagon, new Tiguan SUV, probably the Passat and eventurally Touareg models.
Diesel engines normally get 30% or so better MPG than same size gasoline models, meaning higway MPG of around 50 and city MPG in the 40-range. The Golf (Rabbit), Jetta and New Beetle diesel models consistently ranked in the top 10 best MPG cars when they were sold in the US.
Enjoy the the video.
