Most instructions I have seen on the web regarding the above state that you need to lay on your back and snake your arm up behind the turn signal and release the clip that is on the end towards the radiator. This is especially difficult on drivers side where the battery sits plus you tend to get dirty.
Try this instead, works slick and is EASY!
Tools required, butter knife or similar, small flat blade screwdriver and gloves (latex or?)
1. Insert butter knife under the END of signal that is towards the radiator.
2. Carefully pry fixture up a bit until you see the mounting clip. While looking at clip insert screwdriver and release the clip. Entire fixture will then slide out for bulb replacement!
3. With key off use a bit of steel wool to clean bulb connectors; if water is inside fixture (mine had this) slosh it out with rubbing alcohol and let dry.
4. If water is a factor (or you want to play it safe) use an antioxidant product in socket prior to inserting new bulb. "NoAlOx" works and is found at Home Depot in electrical section.
5. Insert new bulbs using gloves; check for PROPER operation. When satisfied; reassemble and test.
One note however, the turn signal on a 2006 New Beetle and up is a halogen bulb H21 and is VERY hard to find. It is NOT available at Auto Zone or Checker etc. I got my from VW dealer for $16.00 plus .
The VW part number is N-104-456-02 if you use this number on Google you should see WorldImpex come up with the bulbs at a MUCH better price!
Good luck and I hope this helps someone out there!!!
