View Full Version : Last minute Roswell Info/Updates
Just got a confirmation from the Sally Port that all is ready in preparation for our banquet. In addition to the menu posted on the event web-site (www.return2roswell.org (http://www.return2roswell.org/)) we will get rolls and butter and coffee or tea. They will provide tables with seating for 8 so if you want to get organized now you can. The costs if we have 75 people are still $20 per person and will go down if we get more that 75. It is confirmed that kids under 5 are free and 5 to 12 are half price. Hopefully some toy vendors and the bugarack people will be at the banquet selling goods for you to look at.
We are confirming that there will be TV coverage of the caravans as they are going to Roswell in Amarillo and potentially in Albuquerque.
Things are coming together and this will really be fun!

Just got word that Bug A Rack will be at Roswell. They will showcase there new rack product and have a show discount for anyone interested. They also would like some information regarding what you think new products for the New Beetle should be.

I want to have an abduction photo (sponsored by the UFO Museum) taken as Beetles come into the show area on Saturday. For this photo they have your car and you in a photo that looks like you are being sucked up into a UFO - really cool! We will direct you over to the photo area prior to getting you into position for the show. Please have patience with us, but I think this will be the best way to get everyone's picture. This will be a nice momentum from the event.

I closed the room discount today. We have 36 rooms reserved.

PS - This came from the City of Roswell this morning (see below). They are trying to help us promote the R2R10 event.
We are doing posters from your artwork and will be passed out to many businesses. We are trying to lineup entertainment throughout the day Saturday. We do have a lady from the Zoo who is bringing her Barn Owl and a couple of other critters. We will have a band somewhere in the area. I should have the final approval today from the police department about a escort from the UFO Museum back to the Sally Port on Saturday afternoon around 3:30.
SoCal Group:
Here is the estimate of who is going to drive from SoCal. Please let me know of any changes to this list. I really don't need an exact count for the drive out, but Sue Isley needs a head cout for the BBQ in Albuquerque on Weds night.
I count 12 people on the carabug below and 13 for the BBQ. I know some of you said you might bring passengers (Sue? Nancy?). Let me know if I need to bump up the numbers. Cueball is driving out early to set up the event so he will not be on our carabug.
1. Nancy: 1 bug, 1 person
2. Casey: 1 bug, 1 person
3. Mike L: 1 bug, 1 person
4. Sue C: 1 bug, 1 person
5. Paula: 1 bug, 1 person
6. Luke: 1 bug, 1 person
7. Mike/Collen: 1 bug, 2 people
8. Lee/Beth: 2 bugs, 4 people
9. Frank: add 1 bug, 1 person in ABQ
Hope you are all using your remaining few days to get things ready for the trip. This will likely be the last Roswell event.

Luke:
I know there will be 4 people, 2 bugs from Colorado joining us at the BBQ and possibly 4 people, 2 bugs coming from Vegas/Arizona, I will let you know asap if the possibility is for sure
Also, what time is the BBQ going to be??
Casey:
We are just working out the times and arrangement for the BBQ in ABQ. Here is our latest plan:
- Sue Isley is putting on the BBQ at her house in ABQ
- start time is tentatively set for 6:30 pm
- Sue has offered to drive to the Motel 6 area and let us follow her to her house
- we have tentatively set the time to leave the Motel 6 at 6:00 pm
- our carabug will attempt to arrive at the Motel 6 from Flagstaff by about 4 -4:30 to give us time to check in to the motel and clean up
Hope this helps, Luke

That does help thanks Luke, one more question, the people who will be meeting at Sue's for the BBQ would like the address because I dont think they are staying at the Motel 6, unless all the hotels you listed are fairly close to one another and we could have the people not staying at Motel 6 meet us and carabug from there
Thanks,
Casey
Oh and you got 8 people not from SoCal right??
Hi Roswell gang,
It is getting pretty close now and hope you are starting to get ready. Seven or 10 days left depending on when you are leaving. If you are on the fence or worried about finances you should decide to come. This may be the last Roswell and the last chance to see your national friends face to face. I know it is hard to justify when times are tough, but jI really think you will regret it later when times are better and the recession is behind us. Please try to come as this is about the New Beetle people and the more the merrier.
The City and the event organization committee has been working double overtime to ramp up for this R2R10 event. We are hoping that the retail places in Roswell will be giving discounts to all event participants. They are making Saturday "Show Day" a fiesta down town along with our show at the UFO Museum. There will be trick bicycle riders, clowns, face painting, jugglers, bands and lots of stuff to see and do. There will be a police escort from the show area to the Sally Port around 3:30 ( the famous parade of bugs).
We are trying to arrange TV coverage of the caravans as they are coming to Roswell both at the Big Texan in Amarillo and the BarBQue in Albuquerque on Wednesday night. The news will be at the Sally Port when the East coast guys arrive on Thursday so we will try to go out and join them for the "drive into town".
We are working very hard behind the scenes so this will be a great adventure, very fun, and a special week for all to remember!

[The following was in last Sudays Roswell paper on the front page. It also had a picture taken from our T-shirt and poster. Enjoy. - Cueball]
"A cluster of "pods" will descend on Roswell soon for a gathering that is out of this world.
Some of these vehicles will have traveled thousands of miles. But they won't be from outer space.
The Volkswagen New Beetles, which enthusiasts sometimes liken to extraterrestrial craft, will come from almost every contiguous state in the union (except Florida), plus Canada. One pod passenger will even make the trip from Alaska, though she plans to catch a flight to California and ride with a fellow Beetle pilot from there.
Like rivers flowing toward the sea, the paths of these Earth-crafts will start to converge, as the travelers from Canada join up with drivers from the East Coast, Californians mingle with Arizonans, and so on. They will finally arrive in Roswell on the evening of June 25, with the second and last convoy making touchdown around 5:30 p.m.
The New Beetle convention, which has been dubbed "Return to Roswell," will last until June 28. It seeks to revive a tradition that started in 2000 and lapsed in 2008.
Organizer Earl McCutcheon is expecting 50 to 60 vehicles bearing around 100 enthusiasts to take part. While many of the pod pilots have been in contact over message boards for years, most have not met in person since the 2007 gathering, and some will lay eyes on each other for the first time later this month.
While these people may come from vastly different walks of life spread out across the country, they have one thing in common: their love for their cars.
"It's an odd car," said McCutcheon. "You know, it's different. And a lot of the people are old-time Volkswagen owners. You know, they've had Volkswagens all their lives, and this one reminded them of the good old times ... but it's a totally different car."
Many of these cars have been made even more different. McCutcheon, in honor of his home in southern California, has affixed a surfboard to his vehicle. He believes it is the most photographed new Bug in the nation, having appeared in 40 to 50 magazines and a calendar. It has won 248 awards in the past 11 years. McCutcheon said that other Bugs often have flames or designs painted on them, and described one local Roswellian's pod as a "Betty Boop" car.
While most of the gathering will be for the benefit and bonding of Beetle subculture members, the public is welcome to enjoy two parts of the spectacle. Pilots will show off their pods to the public in the UFO Museum and Research Center parking lot starting at 10 a.m. on June 27, and then they will take off for a parade from the Museum to the Sally Port Inn in the late afternoon, though no time has been firmly set yet."
Roswell Bound Drivers:
Only a few more days before the Pods leave their homes to visit the Mothership.
It has been suggested that it would be interesting to display some sort of "Roswell or Bust" sticker, banner or printout on our windows to let the rest of the world know where we are headed (for some of us with older NBs it might be Bust!).
So, if you find some extra time this weekend, crank up your creative juices and put something together. Computer-generated or hand-written makes no difference.
I sent out my cell number to those whom I think are going. I know some of you already have this number, so I did not send a 'private message' to you. Check your private messages on this forum. If you are going and did not get the number, let me know. FRS radios are great when we are together, but cell phones will help for the intial gathering in Barstow and if the group gets separated.
If anyone wants to meet us in Barstow and just drive for a few hours that is fine too.
Is every one ready?
See you in Barstow.
