I hopped over here from the NewBeetle Forums and am looking forward to getting to know everyone.

I just got Bugsy (as in Siegel since he's my "getaway" car) on Saturday. He's a 2005 GL with 52,000-ish miles.

I had my previous car, a 1992 Honda Civic CX for 15 years and then somebody broke in and stole his computer, battery and distributor so the insurance company totaled him and now I have this guy.

Hey, welcome to our little place on the web.

Always great to have another black NB in the group.

We have a great bunch of people for you to meet and we all really enjoy New Beetles, driving, GTGs and .... oh yeah, eating!

Looking forward to the CCC on Saturday! Stopping at Radio Shack tonight to look for the radios. Website says they're on sale. On the cruise do you recommend staying in Automatic or trying out that Tiptronic mode?

And is anyone in this group on Twitter?

If you are already feeling a little uneasy about a first cruise in your newly acquired NB, I'd say leave it in regular automatic ('D') mode.

If you have the transmission with the 'sport' mode (labeled 'S' on your indicator - one notch lower than the regular automatic 'D' mode), you might try this in the canyons. I think your year bug has this transmisson as standard equipment.

This mode works like the automatic mode, but changes the shift points to get more power on the hills. Those of us who have the sport mode really like it on the hills; going up or going down. Your bug will shift on its own, so if you forget to change to 'D' at the bottom of the hill you will not notice much difference.

In the tiptronic mode you will have to do all the shifting yourself which gives you another task to keep in mind. I rarely use this option unless I am on a long grade where I want to control the gear range to just one gear. Your bug will not shift itself in this mode except under extreme conditions.

If you forget to shift out of the tiptronic mode (I did it only once!) when you speed up you will think something has really gone completely haywire with your engine and/or transmission. My solution is to not remove my hand from the shift lever while in this mode. I do this just to remind me that I am not in an automatic shift mode. Others may havs different experiences.
