View Full Version : 2008 NBs are at dealers
Went by Barber VW last night and they had two 2008 coupes wedged between five 2007s. Not much change (except new wheel design) that I could see.
I have read that the 5 cylinder motor for 2008 is supposed to have 170 HP instead of the 150 HP of previous years. However, I did not see that listed on the sticker. Maybe VW is doing the old 'use-up-the-previous-stock-before-the-change-over' thing that they have been so good at in previous years.
It did say 170 ft lbs of torque. Maybe the articles I read mis-quoted VW press (?). Anyone else know?

I saw a few over at Timmons last week, and tried to note any differences, but found none.
Update on horsepower for the 5 cylinder motors for 2008:
I just checked Barber VW again tonight (and then had my first flat in 15+ years on the Passat on the way home along the freeway - bummer, but the factory jack/tools worked pretty darn well). Barber has five 2008 Jettas still in plastic wrap and the stickers are all showing 170 HP motors, but the two NBs are labelled as 150 HP. Hopefully, the next batch of NBs will have the 170 HP rated motors.
Also, it looks like the new 2008 designations will be 'S' for the lower end model (no sunroof), 'SE' for the next model up and 'SEL' for the top end model. At least, that's what the Jetta line up shows for the 2008 year. No word on whether they will have an 'SOL' model !!

LOL!!!!
I found a new source concerning the horsepower of the 2008 New Beetle motor (see below). The HP will NOT be increased in the NB line - this change is for the Jetta and Rabbit only; too bad.
It looks like 2009 will see a re-design for the NB (?) and at that time the power of the 5 cylinder will be increased. The current hood will not accept the new intake that helps make the 20 more HP.
See below:

"Volkswagen is making quite a number of changes to its vehicles for the 2008 model year. Most changes are minor, like color deletions and trim level naming switches. Other changes, though, are more significant - like extra power for the 2.5-liter five cylinder engine used in the Rabbit and Jetta. That motor gets a useful twenty horsepower boost to 170 hp and now produces 177 ft-lb of torque - seven more than last year.
The newfound thrust comes courtesy of a new intake and software to take advantage of the extra breathing capability. The intake, however, doesn't fit under the hood of the New Beetle, which will soldier on with the 150-horsepower version. A replacement New Beetle (a New-New Beetle?)is due for 2009, and we expect it to get the extra twenty horses then."
