Subject: SoCAL NB Greeting

Have had several requests to write an introduction.

I am not good at talking about myself.

I sold my last VW in 1992. I have not owned a used car since 1984. My father has had 3 VW diesels in the past 30 years. I like driving the two that were turbo diesels. I spent several months looking for a VW TDI. In May 2007, I found one. It was a RED 1998 New Beetle with 227,000 miles. Well as a fifty year birthday present to myself, I purchased it. Drove it two weeks and then found problems. After about 3 months, I now have it fixed up mechanically enough to actually drive it.

I live in Torrance and filled up yesterday after work at the Crenshaw Shell in Torrance then drove to visit a friend in Rosamond. They were having movie night at their place. They put me up in their guest room over night. Today, I drove from Rosamond to Palmdale, Victorville, Upland, then back to the Crenshaw Shell in Torrance. The trip was 259.5 miles and I purchased 5.080 gallons of diesel. My cruise control was set to 58 MPH and I ran that speed when ever traffic would allow me to go that fast. Any way, I got 51.08 MPG on my New Beetle. I am trying to take all the lemons that I have experienced the past 3 months and now make lemonade. :-)

The license plate frame says "Yes, it's a diesel".

Not sure if you are interested in my hobby, but here is what I did on vacation at the AirVenture 2007 air show.

Those are NOT model airplanes. There is a pilot in each airplane. Pilot ages ranged from 26 to 77.

Thanks BearJam. The SPAM prevention policy may have prevented me from posting. Replying here so that people know my name is Gary and they will have a link to my Profile instead of needing to go to the memberlist to look me up.

Gary:

Welcome to the forums.

1998 diesel - not many of these around. Your machine looks nice in the picture. You'll have to join us for the Toy Jam event in October that Frank puts on in Long Beach (see the events area for details). This is our largest and most important event (charity).

Our other member with a diesel NB races his on the strip once in a while and does pretty well.

Least we forget, we also have a 98 TDI.
The only way to survive a 130 mile commute.
